Biometric Fingerprint Scanning In Authentication

Fingerprints have been the most authoritative mode of identity authentication for decades. With the growth and development of technology the use of biometric fingerprint scanners has boomed. From personal computers and laptops to high security buildings and office spaces to police stations, these scanners can be located almost any place, big or small, today. The biometric fingerprint scan not only is popular in the world of law enforcement but is a very positive development in the field of identity security.

Biometrics work on the principle of identity authentication on the basis of an individual's anatomical or behavioral traits. The anatomical traits can consist of fingerprints, iris scans, voice scans and sometime even face scans while the behavioral traits are identified mainly through an individual's signatures etc. As the individual needs to be present at the identification point and needs to carry a token or remember a password this method has been seen to be very secure.

As internet and computers continue to integrate into our everyday lives, the need to protect personal data and secure information increases. Online fraud, hacking, phishing and identity theft are not new to anyone anymore. Hence replacing redundant PINs with biometrics or using biometrics in conjunction with PINs or passwords can help reduce the potential risk of unauthorized access to one's bank account, cell phone, network or computer.

Biometrics is being used increasingly these days to reduce and prevent financial fraud and take care of security concerns. Though the biometric fingerprint scan initially was used primarily in criminal identification in forensics, it has found its way into the normal civilian life today and has become a very popular method of biometric security deployment. The large and bulky biometric fingerprint scanner has been replaced by the small fingerprint device that can be readily incorporated in a laptop!

Fingerprints are a network of fine lines that make a design that is unique to each individual. While two sets of fingerprints might look similar to the untrained eye, advanced software or a trained investigator can outline the differences in these patterns with ease.

Standard fingerprint scanners consist of a sensor that is required for scanning and a fingerprint data base and software to identify and match the fingerprint to the database. The biometric fingerprint scan is normally a part of a multifactor authentication system where the fingerprint of the individual trying to gain access is matched to the PIN number or reference number which is tied to the person's account. In high security spaces these biometric fingerprint scanners are used to allow or disallow access. The use of these authentication systems is now being incorporated into simpler processes such as payroll access, time clock etc.

A large number of companies today have identified the benefits of biometric fingerprint scanning in authentication employee identity and company databank security. This system also enhances the network security for system administrators by making remote access more secure. Apart from these large organizations, smaller organizations and individuals are also waking up to the benefits of fingerprint scanning.
